Senior Responsible Investment Specialist Infrastructure (Climate Focus)

 

 

The role

You will focus on executing and operationalizing APG’s Net Zero roadmap (based on IIGCC NZIF), ensuring that decarbonization pathways and transition plans are embedded into investment processes and portfolio management. You will also oversee a broader Responsible Investment agenda covering ESG risks and opportunities such as impact investing (alongside deal teams), physical climate risk, biodiversity and nature conservation, human rights, and governance. You will work with investment teams and portfolio companies to operationalize best practices and enhance long-term value creation across the portfolio.

 

As part of a high-performing team managing over €30 billion in assets with a mandate to double this asset base, you will play a central role in advancing APG’s Responsible Investment strategy across a diverse and evolving infrastructure portfolio. This is a high-impact role for professionals eager to influence how global infrastructure assets are managed to deliver both financial performance and positive outcomes for society and the environment.

 

What you would do

 

Strategic Leadership:

  • Translate APG’s Responsible Investment commitments into measurable actions across the infrastructure portfolio, ensuring alignment with APG’s fiduciary duty and client objectives.
  • Execute and operationalize APG’s Net Zero roadmap (based on IIGCC NZIF), embedding decarbonization pathways and transition plans into investment and asset management processes.
  • Advise senior stakeholders (clients, colleagues, c-suite of portfolio companies) on Responsible Investment risks and opportunities, with a focus on the climate transition, integrating these into investment decisions and portfolio strategies.

 

Investment Integration:

  • Partner with deal teams to identify and deliver value creation opportunities through decarbonization, resilience, and broader Responsible Investment initiatives addressing priority ESG themes such as biodiversity and nature conservation, human rights, and governance.
  • Embed these priorities into asset management plans and portfolio-level strategies to enhance long-term value creation.
  • Conduct advanced analyses on transition and physical climate risks, including scenario modeling and stress testing, to inform investment and portfolio management decisions.
  • Ensure Net Zero enablers and ESG considerations are fully integrated into investment and asset management processes to deliver measurable outcomes.

 

Portfolio Management

  • Proactively engage with APG’s portfolio companies, boards and co-investors to drive sustainability initiatives and operationalize best practices in line with our team’s and client’s Responsible Investment goals and objectives.
  • Monitor and analyze ESG performance across the portfolio, including progress towards Net-Zero and compliance with EU SFDR and other regulations.
  • Supported by the APG Infrastructure Research & Analytics team, oversee ESG data collection, analysis, and insight dissemination to enable informed decision-making, transparency and accountability across the portfolio.

 

Thought Leadership

  • Alongside a team of 5 responsible investment specialists within the Infrastructure team globally, advise APG’s clients and other stakeholders on industry developments, sustainability challenges and market opportunities.
  • Collaborate in cross-functional working groups to design and implement innovative Responsible Investment solutions; helping clients develop and operationalize RI policies and practices across private markets investments.
  • Represent APG in global industry forums and working groups (e.g., IIGCC NZIF, GRESB, UNPRI), positioning as a leader in sustainable infrastructure investing.

Furthermore you bring:

 

Education

  • Master’s degree in Engineering (preferred), Sustainability, Environmental Science, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Relevant certifications in climate finance, ESG investing, or sustainability (e.g., Science Based Targets initiative Academy Certification, CFA Sustainable Investing / Climate Risk, Valuation, and Investing Certificate, IFRS Fundamentals of Sustainability Accounting, etc.) are a plus.
  • English is required, where a good command of Dutch is a plus.

 

Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in sustainability, climate transition, or ESG integration within infrastructure, energy, and/or asset management.
  • Strong track record of implementing Net Zero and Responsible Investment initiatives in infrastructure businesses within a private market context, delivering measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex stakeholder environments, including influencing boards, senior management teams, and co-investors to drive sustainability performance.
  • Experience applying climate risk analysis and ESG integration across the investment lifecycle, including due diligence and asset management.
  • International exposure and understanding of climate and sustainability policies across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Practical experience with priority ESG themes such as biodiversity, human rights, and governance in an investment context is highly desirable.

 

Technical Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of climate frameworks (IIGCC NZIF, TCFD, GHG Protocol, PCAF, Science Based Targets Initiative, EU Taxonomy, etc.); Familiarity with PCRAM, CRIF, and ISO 14090/14091 preferred.
  • Advanced skills in carbon accounting, scenario analysis, and transition risk modeling.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure investment dynamics, valuation levers, and how sustainability impacts financial performance.
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant regulations (EU SFDR and EU Taxonomy) and best practice standards in private markets investment contexts.
  • Proficiency with ESG data platforms and visualization tools (e.g., Qlik, Power BI) preferred.
