Junior Responsible Investment Specialist – Private Natural Capital

The role

APG Asset Management Amsterdam is looking to hire a Junior Responsible Investment (RI) Specialist to join the Private Natural Capital (PNC) team. This team is focused on investments in sustainable forestry, agriculture, and broader natural capital, and is part of APG’s private markets platform.

The role is pivotal in supporting the integration of ESG and impact considerations into the investment process, ensuring alignment with APG’s and ABP’s responsible investment objectives. As the PNC portfolio grows, the need for technical RI capacity becomes increasingly important. The Junior RI Specialist will work closely with the PNC investment team, PNC’s Senior Portfolio Manager Research & Analytics, the Senior Responsible Investment Specialist for PNC, as well as other RI colleagues across APG, to help shape and implement a leading responsible investment strategy in natural capital.

This is an ideal role for candidates with a strong interest in sustainability, natural resources, and responsible investing, combined with an affinity for data management and quantitative analysis.
Candidates with a strong quantitative background will find opportunities to apply their skills in ESG data processing, impact measurement, and analytical tool development, while growing their expertise and contributing to a high-impact investment platform.

What you would do

  • Collaborate with (RI) colleagues to understand data analytics (and visualization) needs, devising strategies and tools to meet those needs.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of ESG data systems, tools, dashboards and data pipelines, including geospatial and climate-related datasets.
  • Leverage quantitative and data management skills to support the collection of ESG and impact data from portfolio companies and investment partners.
  • Conduct in-depth research on ESG factors relevant to forestry, agriculture, and carbon markets, including land use history, biodiversity, and climate impact to inform responsible investment decisions.
  • Support the integration of ESG, stewardship, and impact strategies into the PNC investment process, ensuring alignment with APG’s RI objectives and evolving regulatory standards (e.g., EU Taxonomy, TNFD).
  • Collaborate closely with the PNC team to engage with investees on ESG topics and support alignment with the new impact-oriented mandate.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) to ensure consistent approaches with client policies and objectives.
  • Participate in internal knowledge-sharing and capacity-building initiatives to enhance ESG understanding across the team.
  • Monitor developments in sustainable finance, ESG data standards, and reporting frameworks, and assess their relevance for the PNC portfolio.

What you bring

  • A university degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, economics, sustainability, or business from a top-tier university.
  • A minimum of at least 1 year of experience or strong academic background in responsible investing, ESG research, or sustainability-related roles.
  • Affinity with natural capital sectors such as forestry, agriculture, or carbon markets is a strong plus.
  • Affinity with data management and quantitative analysis; experience with ESG data tools or coding (e.g., Python, Power BI) is a strong plus.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with attention to detail and a proactive mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and possibly in other European languages.
  • A collaborative team player with a high standard of work and organizational sensitivity.

What we offer you

We will offer you, depending on relevant knowledge and experience, a gross salary in salary scale 8 or 9 based on full-time employment and great employment conditions aimed at flexibility, such as:

  • A guaranteed end of year bonus of 8.33%
  • Attention to your vitality and personal development
  • Possibility to work from home 2-3 days per week
  • And obviously a well-managed pension
